What is journaling
Journaling is the process of writing down your thoughts, feelings, goals or plans. Journaling is commonly known as keeping a diary, which is a place to recount events and feelings of those events throughout your life.
When you were a teenager you probably kept a diary, a place to confess your secrets and to express your feelings towards the world without judgement. It probably felt good getting it all out of your mind, but you likely stopped writing in your diary as you grew older. The concept and its benefits still remains the same.
Journaling has evolved from when you were a teen, it can still incorporate keeping a diary but it can be much more than that. Journals take many forms and serve different purposes. A journal is a place to explore in-depth self exploration to gain better personal insight.
Journals are often a place for unstructured free writing, but sometimes people use writing prompts (also known as journaling prompts) to give them ideas on what it write.
Why journal
As someone who's passionate about self care mental health and self-growth, I cannot stress enough the importance of journaling. It may seem like a simple task, but journaling can be incredibly powerful in helping you achieve self-growth, self-discovery, and ultimately, self-love.
Journaling allows you to process your thoughts and emotions. When you write about your experiences, you're able to reflect on them in a way that you wouldn't be able to otherwise. This can help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself, your feelings, and your actions. It can also help you identify patterns in your behavior that you may not have noticed before.
Journaling can be a great tool for reducing stress and anxiety. When you're feeling overwhelmed, taking the time to write down your thoughts can be incredibly therapeutic. It can help you release pent-up emotions and clear your mind. Additionally, it can be a great way to practice mindfulness and be present in the moment.
Journaling can be a fun and creative way to express yourself. There are no rules when it comes to journaling - you can write about anything and everything that comes to mind. You can draw, doodle, or add stickers to your pages. Your journal can be a reflection of your personality and a space where you can be completely yourself.

Here are 5 tips that will help you start a journal.
Examine why journaling will help you
Think about why you are considering journaling, what benefits are you expecting. This will help you to pick a journal that will suit your needs.
Look at styles of journals
There are so many different journals on the market, give yourself some time to research and a explore what would work for you. Ask yourself, do you feel more comfortable with:
- A physical journal where you put pen to paper or would an online app/program work better?
- Lined pages or pages blank spaces?
- Pages for free unscripted writing or prompted?
- Black and white or colourful?
Start small
Pick a time of day (or part of your week) that you are going to journal and give yourself some uninterrupted time to get started. As journaling becomes more familiar you can be less routines about it, you will be more relaxed and confident with journaling with practice.
Just start
Don’t stress about making your journal look pretty. You can get caught up in finding the right colour scheme or worry too much about whether your handwriting is neat enough which can cause anxiousness. Just get started! Pick a pen you like to write with and get started.
The most important thing is to simply start writing. Start by setting aside time: Carve out a little bit of time each day (or every few days) to sit down and write. It doesn't have to be a long time - even just 10 or 15 minutes can be enough to get your thoughts down on paper.
Don't worry about perfection: Remember, your journal is just for you. Don't worry about making everything sound perfect or worrying about what other people might think. Just let your thoughts flow onto the page and see where they take you.
Have you considered using Journal Prompts?
Journal prompts are questions or statements that are designed to inspire you to write about a particular topic. They can be used to help you reflect on your day, explore your emotions, or even work through a problem. Some examples of journal prompts include "What are three things I'm grateful for today?", "What is something I'm currently struggling with?", or "What does self-love mean to me?". You can find a wealth of journal prompts online, through social media. You can also use journal prompt cards. Journal prompts cards are basically a set of cards that contain various prompts or questions designed to help you reflect on your life, thoughts, and emotions. You can find journal prompt card decks on Amazon or other retailers, you can search for free card set online or you can use my free journaling cards.
What about guided journals?
If you're looking for a more structured approach to journaling, you might want to try a guided journal. These journals come with pre-written prompts and exercises that are meant to help you work through specific issues or goals. For example, there are guided journals focused on self-care, gratitude, or mindfulness. You can find guided journals at bookstores, online retailers, or even through subscription boxes.
